introduction

Northern Voices is a small group of amateur singers, led by a professional MD. The singers mostly come from the Stockport, Marple, Hayfield, & Poynton areas

At present, we meet on Thursday evenings about every fortnight, during 'term time' from 8 till 10.00pm, and sing short unaccompanied works including madrigals, liturgical works and secular songs, mostly from the 16th & 20th centuries. Our numbers are currently insufficient to pay for the hire of a hall, so we rehearse at the houses of some of the members. Subscriptions are paid each term to cover our expenses.

We have no connection with the Northern Voices Concert Agency (their webpages) or the Britten Singers, who are based in Manchester.

What we aim to do

We want to sing just for the indulgent pleasure of it. When we're on form, we make a really nice ensemble sound and with each passing year we're getting better at listening to each other and repsonding in a musical way to the challenges of small group singing. We're very open to suggestions from members as to repertoire and Martin brings along interesting works that many of us have not come across before.

Future aims

We've not performed publicly in recent years - but that's not to say we won't in the future. There are about a dozen of us who sing regularly, so we're usually quorate for choral purposes, but we're always on the lookout for new members. You can be assured of a very warm welcome and a lot of support and encouragement from the older vocal cords.

JOIN US

All parts needed!- we require reasonable sight-reading ability, at the sort of level normally attained from singing in a church choir or choral society - however, our core repertoire will soon become familiar, and newcomers are welcome to take a look at some scores in advance of a meeting

Why not come and sing with us for a few weeks and see if you like it too? Just Email us for details of where we are next meeting. We think you'll really enjoy it!

singing outside   sometimes we can sing outside
